From Armoring Ditches To Hot-In-Place Recycling, Variety Of Jobs Adds To Ranger’s Usual Workload

Ranger Central crews recently completed an emergency ditch armoring project to ensure adequate storm drainage for neighborhoods in Port St. Lucie, FL, under a contract with St. Lucie County.

While new construction recovers, Ranger’s Central Division is keeping busy with the usual mix of other work on its books — road widening, pipe work, milling and resurfacing jobs, runway paving and the like.

Add to the list a couple of jobs that aren’t so typical — armoring drainage ditches and hot-in-place recycling on a paving project.

Ranger Construction crews performed emergency grading and armoring work on a series of drainage ditches in a residential section of Port St. Lucie, FL, earlier this year, providing neighborhoods with needed storm water control while addressing bank overgrowth and erosion issues. The $3.1 million contract with St. Lucie County was completed in just under four months.

Another unique project, begun over the summer, involves hot-in-place recycling on a milling and resurfacing job in western Palm Beach County. The $10.1 million FDOT contract improves 14.5 miles of SR-700 in two stages.

First, the top 2" of old asphalt will be heated, milled, mixed with rejuvenator to restore flexibility, and laid back down as the new structural course, all in one pass. Subcontractor HIP will use specialized equipment to perform the recycling work.

Then a Ranger paving crew will make a final pass, overlaying 1" of new friction course to top off the project.

The contract also includes guardrail, shoulder and drainage improvements. The job is scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Ranger Central’s recycling-plus-overlay project on SR-700 is not the only job it has underway in western Palm Beach County, (see article above).

Just a few miles away is a more conventional project, milling and resurfacing a section of SR-15 in the city of Belle Glade under an FDOT contract worth $2.4 million.

The project consists of upgrading two miles of roadway, replacing bridge decks, and making improvements to curb ramps, sidewalks, signage and guardrails. It began in July and is scheduled for completion in November.

Other current work includes milling and resurfacing 12.5 miles of I-95 in St. Lucie County, from the Martin County line to SR-70 in Ft. Pierce, under a $7 million contract, also with the state.

Farther to the north in Brevard County, the division recently completed another lengthy FDOT mill-and-resurface project, improving 14 miles of SR-A1A under a $5.4 million agreement.
