site development in time for
the racing season at the
Gulfstream horse racing
facility in Hallandale, FL.

Ranger Construction — South is
in the home stretch of a “fast
track” schedule to prepare
Gulfstream Park, a renowned
horse-racing facility in
Hallandale, FL, for its racing
season.
Ranger was awarded three
phases of site development
work at the facility,
involving two race tracks and
the expansive stable and
grandstand areas.
Within a week of earning the
Phase 1 contract in April,
Ranger had mobilized and
started reconstructing the
170-ft. wide, 1-mile oval turf
track. The contract also
included construction of a new
90-ft. wide, 1 1/8-mile dirt
track just outside the turf
track.
To have the tracks ready for
the racing season, final
grading of the turf surface
had to be completed by July 10
so the grass would have time
to mature, with the remaining
work completed by late fall.
It was a monumental task given
the compressed time frame.
Ranger South crews worked long
six- and seven-day weeks based
on the demanding schedule.
The project required
approximately 182,000 tons of
embankment, 50,000 cu. yds. of
site excavation and 61,000 cu.
yds. of lake excavation.
The turf track called for more
than 33,500 tons of base,
50,000 tons of sand and 42,000
tons of cushion material. The
dirt track required 21,500
tons of base, 13,000 tons of
sand and 27,000 tons of
running surface.
Phase 1 also called for the
installation of 42 drainage
structures, a water
distribution system, and more
than two miles of drainage
pipe.
During construction of the
first phase, the Gulfstream
Racing Association awarded
Ranger two more phases,
involving site work and
infrastructure for the stable
and grandstand areas. The
extra work came with a time
extension, but production
schedules have remained
extremely tight down the home
stretch. Ranger South crews
are taking it all in stride
and are doing an excellent job
reaching their objectives.
This is the third project
Ranger South has worked on for
Gulfstream’s parent company,
Mega Entertainment Corporation
(MEC). Project Director for
the owner is Jerry Klint,
assisted by Senior Project
Manager Jeff Gooch and Jan
Hansen, who is responsible for
entitlements and permitting.
For Ranger South, General
Supt. Chris Watson has primary
on-site responsibility, while
Michael Mills bid the work and
is Project Manager. Also due
thanks are Grading Manager
Kevin Sosinsky, Grade Supt.
Raymond James, Pipe Supt. Jose
Reid, and the entire team of
dedicated employees and
subcontractors who are
involved on the project.
